What kind of man do you want to become ?
It is really dark now in this part of the world. The various sounds of
various exotic creatures of the night creates a magical setting, which
made me ponder deeper upon the glory of being human and also about the
fragility of human life. It is simply great to be alive as a human,
and since I am so lucky to be a human, it is also my responsibility to
live life like a human.
What makes a human different from an animal?
We like animals are mortals, we just like animals copulate often to
have fun and also to preserve our species (if we have permission and
also a partner :-) ). We just like animals , need food and water to
live, we live in a society and we love the affection of our fellow
beings( just like ants and honey bees), we are afraid of things beyond
our control which could potentially harm our lives and we love our
kids and just like animals we are willing to protect our loved ones
even if it spells danger for our own lives.
So we see that in many aspects our "so-called" human values and traits
are shared by many species of other living beings also. In some
aspects many animals are superior than humans, a cheetah can run
faster than many of us (if we are not on a bike), an eagle can see
what we can't see (unless we are using a binoculars), a virus can kill
many many humans but we can't still save our lives from virus. But
still the fact remains that it is we who control the collective fate
of other living things and this planet. I think it is the only valid
reason why we could claim ourselves as superior beings than other
living things in this planet.
This power for humans to control nature to a large extent and also to
change the fate of other living beings came from his ability to think
rationally with his survival and happiness as the only motivation. Its
this rational thought, not animal behavior based mainly on emotions
and momentary impulses, that has made we humans the supreme species in
this planet. Humans had to fight with the forces of nature and with
other hostile animals to gain the superior position he enjoys in this
planet, with his mind as his only weapon to protect his life. Human
superiority was not guaranteed nor was an accident nor was a gift
from nature. Had every human decided just to act upon his impulses and
emotions and if he never dared to think differently from animals, we
as a species might have never survived.
But it does not imply that all humans in every time have contributed
something for the survival of our species. Most of the humans , were
content or decided to adjust with what he had. He accepted what was
offered to him by nature and blamed his misfortunes on fate or on his
sins. He was too timid or too incompetent to dare to think about a
better life for himself. He lead a life more or less like the animals
, eating, drinking, copulating ,fighting sleeping and found
satisfaction in enjoying material things and found purpose in life in
working for his kids, wife, family and society. He believed that his
destiny was controlled not by his own actions but by something
external to him which he didn't understand or wanted to understand. He
also died just like animals and after a few years everyone, even his
own kids forgot him.
The only real contribution by his life to the betterment of the human
race was his kids, who might be or might not be useful to the species
in future. He is a typical representative of most of the humans who
lived and died on this planet. He was gifted with a mind but he chose
not to use it to change nature for his benefit. He rather decided to
be satisfied with what he had. He gave no lasting contribution to make
human species better. He worked his entire life to consume things
produced by others. He never bothered to produce anything new. He was
the consumer of the human species. I feel that his life never achieved
the real potential of human life.
There were some other humans who believed that the life of a human
being is the most precious and sacred thing in the whole universe. He
saw in himself the crowning glory of all things in this universe,
because nothing in this universe had a mind like him to conceive about
the grandness of the universe in which he lives in. He saw in himself
the best product of nature, capable of changing his own destiny and
even the destiny of the universe in which he lived. He thought that
the greatest purpose in his life was to strive for achieving
excellence in what he is capable of doing. He wanted to change nature
in such a way so that his own life becomes more dignified and more
comfortable. He was the man who didn't accept nature as it was
presented to him.
He had the vision to see the potential things around him and thought
that the true purpose of everything is to make the life of humans
easier. He believed that if humans seized to exist on earth there is
no meaning for nature to exist, since it wont be having any
intelligent being with a sharp mind like him capable of liberating
nature from what it is at present and help it achieve its true
potential of what it can be in future. No significant change in nature
is possible in the absence of human mind and human intelligence. He
belonged to the clan of inventors among the human species.
His clan is responsible for what we are now. We would have never
survived as a species , had we missed this clan of inventors. It is
his clan of inventors, who gave you and me all the modern comforts
that we enjoy today.
What kind of man do you want to become ? The inventor or the consumer ?
